Electric Car Servicing in Melbourne — the Mechanical Side, Done Properly
There's no engine oil to change in an EV, and yet it still needs a mechanic. The battery does the driving, but everything between the battery and the road is mechanical: tyres, brakes, suspension, steering, bearings. That's our side of the car, and we service it for Tesla, BYD, Polestar, MG and most other electric cars at our Knoxfield workshop.
One honest line before anything else: we don't work on high-voltage batteries or their coolant systems. That's manufacturer territory, and any independent workshop that tells you otherwise deserves a second opinion. Everything else on an EV — the parts that actually wear — we handle.
What an EV still needs
Tyres and wheel alignment. The big one. EVs are heavy and deliver instant torque, so they eat tyres 20–30% faster than the same-sized petrol car — much faster if the alignment drifts. We check alignment on the Hunter HawkEye Elite at every EV service.
Brakes. EV brakes have the opposite problem to normal cars: regenerative braking means they're barely used, so discs corrode and callipers seize from inactivity. A proper brake inspection and service keeps them ready for the hard stop the regen can't handle.
Suspension and steering. All that battery weight rides on ordinary bushes, control arms and shocks — and wears them faster. Clunks and knocks over speed humps are the most common EV complaint we see.
12-volt auxiliary battery. Every EV has one, it runs the computers and door locks, and when it dies the car is as stranded as any petrol car with a flat battery. Testing and replacement is quick and cheap — and worth doing before it fails, not after.
Cabin filter, wipers, washers, lights. Unglamorous, still on the schedule.
Logbook servicing. Yes, EVs have a service schedule too. Following it keeps the mechanical warranty intact — and we stamp the book at a fair price.
The makes we see most
Tesla and BYD each have their own service page — they're daily work here. Polestar, MG, Hyundai, Kia, GWM and Xpeng EVs all come through too, along with plug-in hybrids. We also stock EV-rated tyres for the lot.

What we won't touch (and why that's good for you)
High-voltage battery packs, their cooling circuits, and HV electrical faults go to the manufacturer's network — they have the equipment and the training for it, and pretending otherwise with a $60,000 car helps nobody. What you get from us instead is a workshop that knows exactly where its line is, does everything on the mechanical side of it properly, and tells you the truth about which side your problem is on. That diagnosis alone can save you a dealer service booking you didn't need.
Tyres, alignment and service — one visit
The thing dealer service centres can't offer: EV tyres fitted and balanced, a proper wheel alignment, and the mechanical service — all in one booking at 5/1644 Ferntree Gully Rd, Knoxfield. Open Monday to Friday 8am–5pm and Saturday 10am–3pm, backed by 578+ five-star Google reviews.
Buying a used EV? A pre-purchase inspection of the mechanical side — tyres, brakes, suspension, steering — is cheap insurance on a car where the big-ticket item can't be assessed from the driver's seat.
Call (03) 9763 0100 or book online, and we'll give you a straight answer about what your EV actually needs.
