Fuel injector cleaning in Melbourne costs roughly $150 to $450 for a petrol car, depending on whether the injectors stay on the engine or come off for an ultrasonic clean. Diesel injector servicing runs higher, usually $400 to $900 for a set, because the injectors are more complex and have to be flow-tested.
The bigger question is whether cleaning is the right call at all. Sometimes it is, and it saves you thousands against replacement. Sometimes it's a $300 delay on a job that was always going to need new injectors. Here's how to tell the difference, and what each option costs.
Injector cleaning and service prices, Melbourne 2026
Treat every number below as an estimate — a rough guide for budgeting, not a quote. The real figure depends on your engine (four or six cylinders, petrol or diesel, direct or port injection), how hard the injectors are to reach, and whether any need replacing rather than cleaning. We diagnose first and put the actual price in writing before starting — misfires have plenty of causes that aren't injectors, and nobody should pay for an injector clean their car didn't need.
| Job | Typical price |
|---|---|
| On-car injector flush (petrol) | $150 – $250 |
| Off-car ultrasonic clean + new seals, set of 4 (petrol) | $280 – $450 |
| Diesel injector service and flow test, set of 4 | $400 – $900 |
| New petrol injectors, set of 4 fitted | $600 – $1,400 |
| New diesel injectors (common rail), each, fitted | $350 – $900 |
Six-cylinder sets cost more than fours. European and common-rail diesel parts sit at the top of every range.
Where replacement is involved, the genuine-versus-aftermarket choice matters a lot. A genuine Bosch or Denso injector can cost double a generic one — and with injectors, that's often money well spent, because a poorly matched injector puts you straight back into misfire territory. We'll quote both options where a good aftermarket part exists, and say plainly when we think only genuine is worth fitting.
On-car flush or off-car ultrasonic clean?
An on-car flush runs a concentrated cleaning agent through the fuel system while the engine runs. It's the cheaper option and works well for mild symptoms — slightly rough idle, a bit of hesitation — on a car that's mostly driven short trips around the suburbs.
An off-car ultrasonic clean means removing the injectors, cleaning them in an ultrasonic bath, replacing the seals and filters, and testing the spray pattern before refitting. It costs more because it takes hours instead of minutes, but you get proof: a before-and-after flow reading for each injector. If one injector is dead rather than dirty, this is where it shows up — before you've paid to replace all of them.
Our rule at the workshop: if the symptoms are mild, start with the flush. If the car is misfiring on one cylinder, blowing smoke, or has already had a flush that didn't fix it, go straight to off-car testing. Paying for a second flush is how the "cheap" option becomes the expensive one.
Diesel injectors are their own story
Modern common-rail diesel injectors operate at enormous pressures with microscopic tolerances, which is why the diesel side of our workshop treats them as a servicing item, not a fit-and-forget part.
Signs your diesel injectors want attention: hard starting, white or black smoke, a knock or rattle under load, diesel dilution in the engine oil, or the fuel economy quietly getting worse. A full diesel injector service — removal, ultrasonic clean, flow test, new washers and seals — typically lands between $400 and $900 for a four-cylinder ute or SUV. Compare that with $1,400 to $3,600 to replace a set, and testing before replacing pays for itself the first time it saves one injector.
When cleaning won't cut it
Cleaning fixes dirty. It doesn't fix worn or dead. Signs you're past cleaning:
- A misfire that stays on the same cylinder after injectors are swapped between cylinders
- An injector that fails a flow test outright, or leaks when it should seal
- Electrical faults — the winding inside the injector has failed, and no bath fixes that
- Diesel injectors with worn nozzles that no longer atomise, even when clean
In these cases we'll quote replacement of the failed injector, not the set, unless testing shows the others are marginal too. And before any of this, a proper diagnostic check confirms the injectors are actually the problem — coils, plugs, and sensor faults imitate injector symptoms all the time.
Book it in
If the car is idling rough, hesitating, or drinking more fuel than it used to, start with a diagnosis at our Knoxfield workshop. The prices in this guide will get your budget in the right ballpark, but your actual quote depends on your specific car and what it needs — so reach out with the details and we'll give you a real number, in writing, before any work starts.
