Bought an EV and surprised how fast the tyres are wearing? You’re not imagining it. Tesla and EV tyres in Melbourne wear faster than most petrol cars, for reasons built into how electric cars drive. The fix isn’t just any cheap tyre, either, because EVs need the right fitment to stay quiet, efficient and safe. We fit EV tyres every week at our Knoxfield workshop, on Teslas, BYDs, Polestars and more, so here’s what’s going on and what it costs.
Why EV tyres wear faster
Three things gang up on an EV’s tyres, and together they add up.
EVs are heavy, thanks to the battery pack sitting under the floor. They also make instant torque, so even gentle driving loads the tyres hard from a standstill. And that effortless acceleration is genuinely fun, which doesn’t help. Put weight, instant torque and enthusiasm together and the rubber wears quicker than it would on a similar petrol car. It’s normal, but it means staying on top of rotation and pressures matters more, not less.
The right tyre for an EV
Here’s where a lot of EV owners get caught out. Fitting a standard tyre to save money usually backfires.
Good EV tyres are built for the job: a stronger sidewall to carry the extra weight, lower rolling resistance to protect your range, and often foam inside to cut road noise (you notice tyre noise far more without an engine humming away). Many EVs also leave the factory on a specific approved tyre. Put the wrong rubber on and you can lose range, gain noise, and wear it out even faster. We’ll match the correct fitment for your car rather than just whatever’s on special.
Tesla, BYD, Polestar and more
We look after the full spread of EVs Melbourne is buying. Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X. BYD, including the Atto 3 and the rest of the range. Polestar 2 and 3. And the growing list of new EV brands arriving every year.
Same care applies to plug-in hybrids and heavier petrol SUVs that share the same load demands. If you’re not sure what your EV needs, that’s exactly what we’re here to sort, with no guesswork.
What EV tyres cost, and how to make them last
Here are the general ranges so you can plan.
EV tyres generally cost more than equivalent petrol-car tyres, because of the stronger construction and lower rolling resistance, and premium EV-specific tyres can run well into the hundreds of dollars each on larger wheels. The exact price depends on your car and wheel size, so we quote firm for your fitment.
The good news: you can make them last. Rotate them regularly (EVs especially reward it), keep your pressures spot on for efficiency and even wear, and get a wheel alignment if you spot any uneven wear, because EVs will quietly scrub the inner edges if the alignment’s out. Our guide on what causes uneven tyre wear is worth a read if you’ve noticed it already.
